Etymology!™ X: Food as a Lingua Franca
$20.00 – $399.00
Join us for the 10th annual Etymology!™ conference with Douglas Harper, online one more time, April 1~2~3, 2022. We are again offering a 1, 2, or 3-day conference. Friday the 1st will cover Etymology Basics for those new to the study, or those who prefer a review to start out. Saturday and Sunday are the core of the conference, examining the effects on the English language of food, cooking, and eating.
Now that this is our third Etymology!™ conference online, we have a bit of a groove established. We will begin each day of our study weekend with a short video welcome or activity that you can watch at your leisure. We’ll meet in real time at 9:00am Pacific for a morning session, then a midday session, and finally an afternoon session ending at 2:30pm Pacific, with breaks and word study activities in between.
Trusty old Zoom will be the site of our gathering for all three days! Choose your days: come Friday only, just for the basics; Saturday & Sunday for the core conference; or all three days. In addition, this year we will be repeating our wonderful Saturday evening cooking class with home chef Amy Magnafichi-Strong. Amy will present a dinner that has undergone a “translation” of sorts — one that has played a role in the melting-pot history of English. Participants will receive a shopping list and recipe ahead of time, with instructions from Amy over Zoom. Includes wine pairings!
Secure your spot with a fully refundable deposit. All registrations include video recordings of the conference, handouts, links, and additional resources. You may not attend from a phone, and recordings are only available to attendees.
Registrations canceled on or before 2/01/2022 are fully refundable. Registrations cancelled on or before 3/15/2022 are refundable less $50, and non-refundable thereafter. EarlyBird discount is available to Shameless Spelling subscribers. To complete your registration, you must pay the Deposit AND the Registration Balance.
