Description

This longitudinal course is designed to investigate and interrogate the history of English with a focus on the written language, the orthography, and the literacy of its speakers. Using the university-level textbook This Language, A River as our guide, we will explore the growth and development of the English language, including its phonology, its syntax, its contact with other languages, its populations, its changes — and especially, its spelling. The book’s authors, K. Aaron Smith and Susan M. Kim, are both professors at Illinois State University, where I am pursuing my doctorate. Aaron is my dissertation director, and Susan taught me Old English and Middle English. The understanding they share is coherent with the understanding I offer.

In addition to studying the content of the textbook, this course will also include strategies and approaches for reading academic texts more efficiently. The course will consist of 12 two-hour installments, delivered online in real time. Participants must purchase their own copy of the book, but will receive handouts and film resources.

Deposit is refundable with terms.
